About Carrot

Getting to Know this Little Nugget…

Carrot is a rescue pup from Texas. She lived outside with 2 other dogs until her owners surrendered them. The adoption folks said that she was loved, but her physical needs (like grooming) were neglected. She also had heartworms.

I adopted her when she was just 1.5 years old. Over the winter, she persevered through 4 months of tough heartworm treatment and she’s now heartworm free! We celebrated her 2nd birthday in March 2021.

Carrot is incredibly friendly and loves kids, dogs, strangers and treats. She’s curious, smart and confident.

Carrot’s habits:

  • Overall, Carrot is super chill and incredibly sweet

  • She is potty trained to only go outside

  • wakes up a little after dawn, but can occupy herself until walk time

  • needs 2-3 walks a day, make sure she doesn’t eat food from the ground (chicken bones can be lethal to dogs)

    • the first walk between 7-9am, 1-3 poops (gets a treat after walk)

    • the second walk between 3-6pm, 1-2 poops (gets a treat after walk)

    • If the second walk is early, then she’ll need a brief pee break before your bedtime.

  • likes to eat after her walk

  • tends to fall asleep for the night around 7ish

  • likes to sit on the windowsill or by the window all day

  • will go to the door when she needs to go out. she’s pretty patient, but if you ignore her signals for over an hour, she’ll bark to get your attention

Carrot loves:

  • inside fetch with her toys

  • finding treats hidden in a blanket or rolled paper bag

  • sleeping in her teepee

  • naps on her blanket

  • treats in moderation

  • saying hi to dogs on the street

  • playing with kids

Other essential information:

  • Commands

    • She knows sit, stay, wait, down, up, and “stay and wait” (command to stay still when we are walking)

    • If you want her to stop doing something or get off the furniture, tell her “No” or “Leave it!”

    • If you’re giving her permission to do something (like to time to start walking again), tell her “Okay.”

  • Separation Anxiety:

    • We’re working on her separation anxiety; she doesn’t like to be left alone in a home or apartment. She’s fine being alone in a room or part of the house, as long as someone else is home.

      • If Carrot is agitated and howling when I leave her, just walk her around the block and she’ll be fine.

  • She rarely barks unless she needs something (to go out, is very thirsty) or if there’s a loud, jarring noise.

  • If Carrot is agitated and howling when I leave her, just walk her around the block again and she’ll be fine.

  • Safety essentials

    • Carrot is microchipped

    • She does not have health insurance, but of course I would pay for medical issues.

    • Home vet is Prospect Heights Veterinary on Franklin Ave in Brooklyn.
